Overall Opinion:
After tanning with Tanologist Self Tan Drops Dark, I gave it 1 out of 5 stars.
On the surface, it seems like a pretty great product. You simply have to mix drops of the tanner into your own moisturizer. The dry time is quick and doesn’t add any additional step in your skincare routine.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t produce much of a tan at all, and the small change you do see is gone in 1-2 days. Add that to the underlying self-tanner smell, and this product simply isn’t a winner.
While there are desirable aspects to Tanologist Self Tan Drops Dark, I think you’ll be better off searching elsewhere for the perfect tanning product.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
Tanologist Face + Body Drops Dark are clear drops, so there’s no color guide. This isn’t really a big deal and doesn’t lead to any streakiness since you mix it into your body moisturizer.
I expected the drops to change the feel of my moisturizer, both when I applied it and when it dried, but it didn’t at all. It felt just like it normally does when I use my moisturizer.
Application
For the most part, I think Tanologist Self Tan Drops Dark is easy to apply. You simply add the drops to your chosen moisturizer and apply it as you normally would.
The tricky part is figuring out how many drops you should use. They direct to use 1-12 drops, which is a big variety, and they don’t specify if that’s how many drops you should use per pump of lotion, or for your entire body.
I chose to use 6 drops per pump of lotion. Since they have a light and medium option for the drops, I figured less drops of the dark shade to start was probably wise.
So I ended up using 6 drops for each area of my body (legs, abdomen, arms, back, chest, etc.).
Drying Time
I didn’t see any change in dry time for my normal moisturizer, so I would say the dry time is however long your daily moisturizer takes to absorb into your skin without the drops.
Smell (Before Application)
Tanologist Self Tan Drops Dark has a perfume-like scent to it when you first mix it into your lotion.
However, the scent isn’t very strong, so it goes away once you mix it into your moisturizer.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
At first I thought it was in my head, but after about three hours, I started to smell like self-tanner.
It wasn’t overpowering, but it was a gross underlying smell. And since I didn’t want to go rinse off my moisturizer, I was kind of stuck smelling like that until I took my next shower.
Color Produced
The instructions say to use 1-12 drops, which isn’t very clear or straightforward. Since these were the dark drops, I chose to use 6 drops per pump of lotion.
I don’t know if I didn’t use enough drops, but even 6 seemed like a lot of product to mix in with my body lotion.
The tan took about 6 hours to show any color, and it didn’t really make any difference. It looked like I had used a Jergens-tinted moisturizer. So overall, I’m bummed with how my tan looked.
How Long It Lasts
I’m super disappointed with how long my tan with Tanologist Self Tan Drops Dark lasted. I didn’t achieve much of a tan to begin with, but what I did achieve was basically gone by my next shower.
I think it only lasts for about 1 day, maybe 2 days tops, which is less than impressive.
OK For Men?
Technically, yes. I don’t really think this is a great product for anyone, but I don’t see why men couldn’t use it.
However, this could be a little trickier for men to use since, in my experience, most men don’t use body moisturizer as frequently as women do.
Price
Less than $20 for a self-tanner seems pretty reasonable to me, but it’s simply not worth the money for two reasons…
First, you have to use quite a few drops to cover your entire body, so you’ll likely go through the drops quickly.
Secondly, I didn’t see any noticeable change from Tanologist Face + Body Drops, and these are supposed to be the dark ones!
So overall, this isn’t worth it, regardless of the price.
