Overall Opinion:
I’ve used many products from the ULTA Brand, and they’re totally hit or miss for me. Unfortunately, ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse has to be filed under the ‘miss’ column.
In all fairness, my review is based on a single use of the product, and they recommend using it daily to achieve results. However, I’ll go into more detail in my review, but that’s not how a self-tanner should work, in my opinion.
While I absolutely loved the scent of the tanner, it simply didn’t develop any color change after using the product, which was super disappointing.
There are plenty of other self-tanners available on the market that deliver results after a single use, and are much better suited for those hoping to achieve a nice tan.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse is a white foam, so it doesn’t have a color guard. This was super shocking to me as I don’t think I’ve used a tanning mousse without a color guard.
This tanning mousse is also much more watery than the average mousse, so it really is more of a foam than a mousse, in my opinion.
The product is comfortable to apply, but it’s pretty sticky for 5-10 minutes post-application. Once it absorbs, however, it’s very comfortable to wear!
Application
The application is both simple and challenging. On the simple side, the mousse is easy to apply and cover each area of your body. You just want to make sure you apply it on clean skin.
I also chose to apply the product with a tanning mitt, which made it super easy to massage into my body, so I would strongly recommend that.
The difficult aspects of this self-tanner are that it doesn’t have a color guard, which is super unusual for a tanning mousse, and the brand wants you to use it daily to see results.
I don’t like that aspect. I personally don’t feel like tanning should have to be apart of your daily routine, especially when there are so many products that deliver noticeable results after a single use.
Drying Time
The dry time is about 5-10 minutes.
Up until that point, I felt pretty sticky, but once that time had elapsed, I was able to get dressed without any issue, especially since there wasn’t a color guard to worry about staining my clothes.
Smell (Before Application)
ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse has the most delicious coconut scent to it! I felt like I was on a tropical island when I applied it.
This was definitely a plus for me for this product. I just loved the scent so much!
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
After about an hour or two, that amazing scent sadly went away. I was personally bummed because I loved how I smelled with this on!
The good news, however, is that I didn’t start to smell like self-tanner when the scent wore off, which can often be the case.
Color Produced
I genuinely didn’t see any change to my skin color after using this self tanning mousse. My skin looked the exact same as it did before I used the product.
This is based on a single use, however, and the brand does suggest using it daily to see results. To me, that’s totally bonkers.
While I’m disappointed, I’m also not that surprised. This tanning mousse was so much different than the majority of other quality tanning mousses I’ve used, so I was going to be more surprised if I saw a change to my tan.
How Long It Lasts
Since I didn’t notice any color change to my skin, I’d have to say my tan lasted zero days.
I do want to note that ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse says the tan will build gradually with daily use, so if you use this product for days on end, you might see a change to your tan.
However, I simply don’t think that’s how a self-tanner should work. You should be able to see results after the first use, enjoy the tan for a few days, and reapply. Tanning shouldn’t have to be a daily thing, in my opinion.
OK For Men?
No. Since ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse doesn’t create any color change to your skin, this really isn’t suitable for anyone looking for a quality self-tanner.
Price
ULTA Beauty Gradual Tan Water Mousse is extremely affordable, especially given how much product you get.
Unfortunately, that still doesn’t make it worth the money. As much as I love the scent of this product, it simply doesn’t develop any sort of color change to your skin after a single use.
