Overall Opinion:
Sun Labs self tanners have been around for a long time now. I remember using them in high school over 10 years ago. They’ve stayed pretty consistent with their products this entire time too. I’ve always liked their products, but they still have some room for improvement.
So, I give Sun Labs Very Dark Foam 3.5 out of 5 stars.
For the most important aspect, the color produced, I was a little let down. I had a medium to dark shade tan, but I was expecting to be darker, just based on this being their darkest shade. Now, my tan looked nice. It was very smooth and even. But it was a little too light to be called their “very dark shade”.
As far as the other components go, everything is pretty good. It smells good when you’re applying it, it dries in average time, and is easy to apply. I just don’t like how it smells the morning after it develops. Oh, and they need to put the directions on the bottle!
So overall, this mousse is better than average, but not my absolute favorite one out there.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
This Sun Labs mousse has a very fluffy texture. The color of the guide is a light green color; it almost looks mint green. It’s kind of an odd color for a guide. It’s not super dark as you apply the product, but you can see where you’re applying it.
Application
When you purchase the product through the Sun Labs website, it comes with a mitt. The mitt looks very nice and high quality, but I purchased through Amazon so I didn’t receive the mitt.
With that being said, I still used a mitt to apply the mousse and would recommend you do so as well. If you don’t, you risk orange palms, and those never look good!
I didn’t have any issues when applying this mousse. It’s actually really easy to apply compared to a lot of products out there. The guide blends in nicely, and the texture of the foam makes it easy to rub into your skin.
So overall, application is a breeze as long as you protect your hands!
Drying Time
Sun Labs Very Dark Foam dried a little quicker than your average mousse. It took around 20-25 minutes before my skin felt dry to the touch. Most mousses take over 30 minutes to dry.
It was a little sticky to the touch as it dried, but I’ve felt worse.
Smell (Before Application)
I really enjoyed the smell of this mousse! It has a cherry/almond scent. As I was applying it, I couldn’t smell much DHA at all, which was great.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
After I had the product on my skin for 8 hours, it didn’t smell so pleasant. The scent was predominantly DHA (self tanner) smell, which was disappointing. I wish I could still smell the sweet cherry scent!
Color Produced
I tried this Sun Labs Mousse in their Very Dark shade. One weird thing is that the bottle doesn’t state how long to leave the product on before showering it off. I find that very odd. So I left it on overnight, but who knows, it could be an express tan!
So, after showering it off the next morning, I had a medium to dark shade tan. It was by no means a “very dark” shade, which was a little disappointing to me. I was about 3 shades darker when I was hoping to be 4-5 shades darker. I’d say this is a true medium/dark tanner rather than ultra dark.
Now, the tan I got was very nice looking (besides being a bit too light). It was so smooth looking; I was really impressed. I had no streaks or darker looking patches which is always great. In my opinion, my tan was very natural looking and you couldn’t tell it came from a bottle.
How Long It Lasts
Unfortunately, my tan didn’t last very long. It only lasted around 2 days before it drastically faded. I’m upset it didn’t last longer.
To be fair, the bottle does say you’ll need to apply it 1-3 times a week along with a tan extender to maintain your tan. To me, 3 times a week is a lot. I’d rather apply it 1-2 times per week.
As my tan faded, my arms and upper body looked okay, but my feet and legs started to look very patchy and scaly.
OK For Men?
Yes, if you’re wanting a medium to dark shade tan. Just don’t expect a “very dark” tan.
Price
The bottle and mitt sell for $24.00 on their website, which is a good price! It’s not the absolute cheapest out there, but it’s less than average and you get a mitt with it as well.
