Overall Opinion:
I think St. Tropez Dark Bronzing Lotion is a sub-par average self tanner, so I gave it 2 out of 5 stars.
The color this one produces redeemed it because there’s not much else I like about this tanner.
I had a dark, natural looking tan. I looked bronzed and ready to hit the pool. I really like the color from this self tanner, but for some of you, it may be too orange.
Now, for the things I didn’t like. I really don’t like how messy this one is to apply. I ended up looking like a green, streaky mess.
It also never dried, so I felt sticky and uncomfortable all night long. It’s really smelly; the scent is perfume mixed with DHA (yuck!).
So overall, I wasn’t too impressed, although I liked the color this self tanner produces.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
This one is a lotion, but to me it kind of feels more like a gel. It’s very slick and it has a dark brown/green guide to it. The guide is honestly a bit intimidating; it’s so dark!
The lotion’s texture is not sticky, and is a little on the thicker side.
Application
Application is such a pain with this self tanner.
You absolutely have to use a mitt or else it’ll be so messy (even with a mitt it’s messy). The guide is pretty hard to blend in, and I was left looking like a streaky, green mess. My husband was calling me the hulk, it was THAT green.
It really weirds me out when the guide comes out green on your skin.
Also, make sure not to get any of the product on your towels or bathroom as it will stain and turn into a dark, green mess.
You’ll need to allot a good amount of time to apply this one; it took me a good 30-40 minutes to blend it into my skin, which is longer than most self tanners take.
Drying Time
You guys, this one is SO sticky. It didn’t dry literally all night long. I felt so gross and disgusting while I had this self tanner on. It even interrupted my sleep, and I’m a deep sleeper!
When I woke up the next morning, I could still feel it on my skin and couldn’t wait to shower it off.
Smell (Before Application)
I personally am not a fan of how this one smells.
To me, it’s way too perfumey, with a little bit of DHA. The smell was kind of floraly, which I don’t like. It’s not a fresh scent, it’s rather heavy and gaudy smelling.
I also didn’t like how I could smell DHA mixed in there. It smelled pretty bad.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
The next morning, all I could smell is DHA. This one definitely has that self tanner smell, and it’s very strong.
Color Produced
The color produced is this product’s only redeeming quality.
St. Tropez Dark Bronzing Lotion produces a nice, dark tan. My tan was a natural shade, and I really liked the look of it. Although, I still prefer their dark mousse to this lotion.
My tan was even, despite me going to bed looking like a streaky mess. I really liked how it was a deep brown color, it looked sun kissed. For me, the color was just right, but for some of you out there, you may find the color too orange/dark.
How Long It Lasts
My tan lasted about 4 days, which isn’t too bad. You’ll probably need to apply this one 1-2 times per week.
It also faded very splotchy, but I expected that because it’s a darker tan.
OK For Men?
I think this one is way too messy for men. But if they’re willing to brave the mess and green guide, the tan produced is nice.
Price
At $44.00 per bottle, St. Tropez Dark Bronzing Lotion is pretty pricey.
