Overall Opinion:
I’ll just say it… I think this is the worst product St. Tropez has put out there. After testing it, I give it 1 out of 5 stars (the lowest rating I give).
I’ll tell you why I don’t care for this self tanner. First, it’s messy and difficult to apply. It doesn’t blend into your skin easily, and I really had to put in some effort. Even then the guide looked very streaky on my skin.
It also reeks. It smells so bad, one of the worst smelling self tanners I’ve tried (and I’ve tried A LOT!).
It never really dries; I felt sticky all night long.
And to top it off, I didn’t even get a decent tan. My tan was way too light for the hassle I went through, and the shade was very unnatural looking on me.
So, I think there are better self tanners out there (even within the St. Tropez line). But I’d steer clear of this bronzing gel.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
This gel is black in color, and pretty thick. I’m actually surprised with how dark the guide is; it’s one of the darkest ones out there.
The gel comes out pretty thick and gooey, and once applied to your skin, it becomes thinner and stickier.
Application
St. Tropez Bronzing Gel can be tricky to apply. First off, the texture isn’t the easiest to work with. It’s sticky, which creates a lot of work for you as you blend it in. I really need to put some effort into blending the guide into my skin.
The guide is very messy, so you need to be uber careful while applying it. The guide comes out of the bottle looking black, but as it’s applied, it turns a dark green color on your skin.
When I was finished applying it, I looked very streaky, and like my skin had a dark green hue to it.
Drying Time
This bronzing gel takes over 45 minutes to dry, and even then it stayed sticky on my body.
I felt extremely uncomfortable while waiting for it to dry, and even all night long I could still feel it on my skin.
Smell (Before Application)
This self tanner smells downright bad.
It has a very strong, sour DHA smell mixed with some floral scent.
I really couldn’t stand the smell, it even made me gag at times. When I’d wake up in the middle of the night, I still got a good whiff of it, and it reeks.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
It smelled bad well into the next morning. This is one of the worst smelling self tanners I’ve tried.
Color Produced
After the pain of applying, waiting for it to dry, and the rancid smell, I was really hoping for a positive outcome as far as color produced.
I guess that was wishful thinking because I was really disappointed with my tan.
I got a pretty light tan, and it looked yellow to me. It wasn’t nearly dark enough for my liking and it looked unnatural, not a good combo.
I really wasn’t pleased with my results, so I wouldn’t use this tanner again.
How Long It Lasts
I got about 3 days of use out of this tan before it faded.
My skin becomes crackly as it faded, and my tan didn’t look good either.
OK For Men?
No. I don’t think men will like this gel at all.
Price
This self tanner isn’t cheap. It’s $35.00 for 5 ounces, which works out to $7.00 per ounce. I’d gladly pay that for a good self tanner, but not this one.
