Self Tanning Tips For Hands and Feet
Before we get to specific self tanning tips for hands and feet, let’s go over the number one hurdle to getting a perfect, safe self tan.
So, the first hurdle to the perfect self tan is finding the right self tanner that works for you and your skin. It isn’t a “one size fits all” kind of task.
If you don’t already have one picked out you can visit our self tanner reviews and shuffle through our personal experiences with each tanner to see what we recommend to try.
Some people will prefer the lotions over sprays, or the towels over the gradual tanners, but once you’ve picked your tanner of choice it’s on to hurdle #2. Which is…
Self Tanning Tips For Hands and Feet (and other hard to reach areas)
This can be a daunting task, and if you aren’t familiar with these “areas” you either:
A. Have been walking around half tan…
Or
B. Have been walking around with really tan armpits…
Here are a few tips and tricks to help you master your tan and these hard to reach areas:
- Whether you are spray tanning or applying self tanning lotion, wear the same thing every time if you aren’t applying self tanner in your birthday suit. Wearing a snug and dark colored bikini will work best if you don’t want to tan nude.
Your Back:
- It may be a good idea to have a partner or friend help out with the application. But if that doesn’t work you can get a good quality self tanning applicator mitt, with extra reach to help tan between your shoulder blades. Or you can use a strap or old towel. Just put some product along the surface of these, and then move it back and forth.
I mean, is there a better pick up line than: Hey there, wanna help me tan my back?
- I haven’t personally tried this method but I have heard that using a cheap roller paintbrush is a good way to tan your back. Make sure to clean, rinse and let dry before use. Make sure to use the sponge roller and not the thicker and fluffier one.
Honestly, I can’t imagine going to Home Depot and asking where I can find an extra long paintbrush to tan my back. But GOOD FOR YOU if you do!!
Your Face:
- The skin on your face is much different than the skin on the rest of your body.
- If you decide to use the same product on your face that you use on your body, apply a thin layer of lotion to your face and neck and let dry first.
- One problem area is near the hair line, particularly for blonde and light haired people. A sunless tanning lotion can discolor hair if used improperly. To prevent this problem, apply a thin line of moisturizer along the hair line.
Your Hands:
- Wash your hands about every 5 minutes while applying self tanning lotion so your hands don’t turn orange by mistake. You can also just wear medical gloves to avoid the issue all together, or purchase a special self tan mitt.
Your Armpits:
- Don’t avoid applying self tanner to your armpits, just wipe lightly with a damp washrag or baby wipe after application to give a lighter, more realistic look.
Your Elbows & Knees:
- The tan on your elbows, knees, and even ankles may show up darker or patchy. This is because the skin is rougher here and these are joints that are constantly moving.
- Be particularly careful about exfoliating and moisturizing these areas before application.
- Also, remember to moisturize skin regularly after you use self tanner so that your tan lasts longer – it can wear off quicker from dry skin.
- To be extra carefully you could go a little lighter on the dryer areas of your skin. the abundance of dead skin cells around dry areas will soak up the lotion so fast that these areas sometimes turn orange.
