Overall Opinion:

Overall, this product produces really nice color and applying this product is pretty easy (besides the fact that you have to apply it daily).

The smell of this product isn’t pleasant, it reeks of DHA.

The application is simple, it goes on like a daily moisturizer, however the fact that you have to apply it daily is pretty inconvenient.

I’m not a fan of gradual self tanners, but this one is the best one I’ve seen as far as the color produced.

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

Neutrogena Build A Tan comes out as a smooth lotion, with a light guide.  The guide is a light brown, almost-orange color and it blends nicely into your skin.

Application

This tanner goes on smooth, it’s applied just like your daily moisturizer.

It has a light guide in it, but it isn’t very messy when applying.

The guide is an orangey, light brown color and it quickly blends into your skin.

I used gloves when applying this one, but I think you would be okay without using them as well.

This is a gradual tanner, so you will have to apply it everyday until you achieve the tan you want.

Drying Time

Neutrogena Build A Tan Sunless Lotion takes longer than average to dry.

It took over about 45 minutes for the product to dry completely.

I felt extremely sticky until the product dried, and had to wait a while to put on my clothes because of this.

Smell (Before Application)

I’ll just come right out and say it– the smell of this tanner is really bad.

It smells like self tanners I used to use 10 years ago, very strong DHA with no fragrance or scent to cover it up.

Obviously, I was not a fan of the smell at all.

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

I couldn’t wait to shower this product off, unfortunately once I did the DHA smell still stuck with me the next day.

Color Produced

My favorite thing about this product is the color produced.

I usually set my standards pretty low for gradual self tanners, due to the light tan they produce.

But after my first application of the Neutrogena Build A Tan, I was a few shades darker.   I would say it was more of a light-medium tan.

So I was extremely excited to try it the next few days, and with each application I got a few shades darker.

My final tan was a medium to dark shade that I was really happy with.

It was an even, golden color that made me look like I just got back from a week at the beach.

How Long It Lasts

Since this is a gradual self tanner, you need to apply it often to maintain your tan.

I’d say this product lasted about 2-3 days, so once you stop applying it, it fades rather quickly.

It also became splotchy in some areas as it faded, which I didn’t like.

OK For Men?

If you know a man wanting to use a gradual self tanner, this is one of the best ones out there as far as color goes.

However, I don’t think many men are looking for gradual tanners, because they’re a pain to apply several days in a row.

The 6.7 oz bottle costs $9.99 which breaks down to $1.49 an ounce.  Talk about a great deal!
