Overall Opinion:

Overall, I really don’t like Mario Badescu Self Tanning Lotion, so I gave it 1.75 out of 5 stars.

First off, they call it a lotion, but it’s actually a very watery gel.  The texture resembles a very sticky water like substance.

The smell is awful, it smells strong of botanical and DHA.  The botanicals didn’t smell good, they smell really herbal, and it didn’t cover up the DHA smell.

The worst part about this product is it never dried.  It stayed feeling wet and tacky on my skin all night long, which made for a very restless night.

The one thing that was decent is the color it produces.  I ended up with a natural, medium shade tan.  But in my opinion, it’s not worth putting up with the stink or the drying time.

There are other products that give nice tans, without the smell and stickiness.

So, I was really let down by this self tanner and I wouldn’t recommend it.

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

So, this is called a “self tanning lotion”, but I don’t see how they can call it a lotion.

It’s a very runny, watery, gel.  It’s clear in color, and doesn’t appear “lotion” like at all.

Application

Since Mario Badescu Self Tanning Lotion is clear, I thought I could get away with using just my hands to apply it, instead of a tanning mitt.

I was wrong.  This product is SO runny, it’s almost like water.  So you’ll definitely need to apply it with a mitt to help contain the product while applying.  Otherwise, you’ll end up with a runny, sticky, mess like I did.

It’s kind of like applying a watery, sticky aloe vera gel.

The good thing is you don’t have to worry about a guide staining your bathroom.

Drying Time

This is why I had to rank this self tanner so low.

It NEVER dried.

I went to bed feeling sticky and wet, and woke up feeling sticky and wet.

After I applied it I waited around an hour hoping it would dry more before I got into bed, but it never did.

So I finally went to bed, and had the hardest time sleeping because I was so sticky and I’d wake up with my body parts sticking to each other.  It was so annoying.

This is probably the worst drying time I’ve ever seen.

Smell (Before Application)

Mario Badescu Self Tanning Lotion doesn’t smell very good.

It smells very strongly of botanical herbs, mixed with DHA.

They attempted to cover up the DHA smell with a botanical one.  But in my opinion, the botanical smell is just as bad. EW!

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

The not so pleasant smell was still there all through the night and well into the next morning.

Color Produced

The reason I didn’t give this product a 1 star rating was because of the color.

The color was decent.  It wasn’t anything special, but it wasn’t as bad as I had expected, due to the extended drying time.

After I washed the self tanner off I had a medium shade tan that was pretty natural looking.

It was a shade that was between a light and a dark tan, and I was surprised it didn’t turn out incredibly splotchy due to my body parts sticking together.

I still wish it would’ve been darker than it was, but I was just happy it wasn’t a total disaster.

How Long It Lasts

The medium tan lasted around 2 days before it faded.

It didn’t become too splotchy as it faded which was good.

OK For Men?

No, I really don’t think men will like this one.

Price

Mario Badescu Self Tanning Lotion is $3 per ounce, which is pretty affordable.  But I definitely wont be paying that again for this one!
