Overall Opinion:

I found this self tanning body butter to be very average.  There are some things I like, and some I don’t, so I gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars.

So, for the most important part, my tan.  I got a nice, medium tan after one application.  I really liked the way my tan looked; it was brown and natural.  However, it wasn’t quite dark enough for my liking. I think a lot of you looking for a natural tan that’s not super noticeable will like this one.

My tan didn’t fade well, however.  It made my skin dry and patchy, which wasn’t pretty.  I expected a “body butter” self tanner to do the opposite!

The smell became nauseating after a while, and you can definitely tell the smell is artificial.  It was just too much for my liking.  By the next morning, I reeked of DHA… I smelled horrible!

So overall, I think this self tanner is pretty average, not the worst, and not the best.  I do like the idea of a self tanning body butter, but just wish it was executed a bit differently!

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

This is very thick body butter, with a brown caramel colored guide.  The guide isn’t the darkest I’ve seen; it’s more orange looking than most.  The guide is truly a caramel color, and it makes sense because there is actual caramel in this product for coloring.

Being a “Body Butter”, I expected this self tanner to be white, but it’s not.  In the jar, it actually kind of resembles mud.

Application

Now, with this one a tanning mitt isn’t absolutely necessary, but I still highly recommend it.

This product is very thick, which makes it a little harder than most to rub in.  The guide also gave me a little trouble when it came to blending in the product.  It kind of just sat on top of my skin in places and didn’t want to absorb.

So after I had applied, my skin looked pretty streaky.  I was surprised, and wasn’t expecting this with a body butter.  Usually my skin drinks up body butters.

Drying Time

Josie Maran Self Tanning Body Butter stayed sticky and wet on my skin for quite some time.  It took over an hour to dry, and even then I felt sticky.

This product is just so thick, so I kind of expected this.  My skin took forever to absorb it.

I was sadly disappointed with the drying time, it was just too long.

Smell (Before Application)

I tried this one in their Mango scent.  I think they have 4 scents available through their website.

In the jar the product smells good, although it’s very strong and kind of artificial smelling.  You can also smell some DHA mixed in there too.  So the smell isn’t the best, but it’s not the worst.

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

While applying it, and as the color developed, the smell became so strong of DHA.  I smelled both sweet and sour at the same time, which was actually a bit nauseating.

You could definitely tell the sweet smell was artificial, which I really don’t like.

I really don’t care for the way this one smells the next day, it’s pretty bad.

Color Produced

A lot of the reviews online say this is a gradual self tanner.  But I looked on the packaging and website, and it never said anything about this being a gradual self tanner

I think people just assume since it’s a body butter, that you apply it daily.

But anyways, after one application I had a medium shade tan.

My tan actually looked pretty nice, the color was good and not orange.  My tan wasn’t AS dark as I’d like it to be; it was about 2 shades darker than normal.  But it did give some color, and the color it gave me was a nice tan.

If you’re looking to be very dark, I’d try another tanner, but this one is good for a very natural look.

How Long It Lasts

My tan lasted about 3-4 days, and it faded SO patchy.  I was surprised at this; I thought it would fade smooth because the product is supposedly so hydrating.  But I think this one kind of dried my skin out after a few days, which sucks.

I don’t want to have to apply this one daily in order to maintain moisture.  That’s what my normal moisturizer or tan extender is for.

OK For Men?

Men could like this one if they’re looking for a medium shade tan.  It just takes a really long time to dry and the scent bothered me.

Price

Josie Maran Self Tanning Body Butter is $42 per jar, which sounds very expensive (it IS very expensive).  But when you break it down by ounce, it’s only slightly higher than your average self tanner.
