Clinique Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion is one of our favorite self tanners.

It’s easy to apply, smells pretty good, lasts a long time and produces a nice, bronze color.  For most people, this self tanner has everything they’re looking for.

The only potential negative of this product is it may not be dark enough for those who like to look super tan.

But at a cost per ounce of $5.47, it’s one of the better bargains out there considering how well it works.

Detailed Review:

Look and Feel

Clinique Self Sun comes out of the tube as a very thin and light-feeling lotion.  In fact, it’s one of the lightest self tanners we’ve tried in quite some time.  As for the color of the lotion, it’s a light tan with a tiny amount of shimmer added in (which is a nice touch, especially for the ladies).

Application

This product is a very easy one to apply.

Like we mentioned before, it’s extremely light, which means it goes on easily and smoothly.  And because it’s not overly thick, you don’t have to spend a lot of time trying to blend it in.  A simple swipe over most areas will suffice.

Another thing we like about Clinique’s self tanner is the color of the “guide” that’s used.

For those of you who don’t know, a “guide” is added to many self tanners that allows you to see where you’ve applied the product.  The guide serves almost as a “dye” that remains on your skin until you wash it off.  That way, you’ll know if you’ve missed any spots before the actual tan or bronze color forms in a few hours.

The nice thing about Clinique Self Sun is the guide is very light.  So you’re able to see where you’ve put it on your body, without looking like you’ve slathered yourself in barbecue sauce!

If you’re looking fro a self tanning lotion that’s easy to apply, you can’t do much better than this product.

Drying Time

Because this product has a very light consistency, it dries extremely fast compared to most other self tanners.

After about 30 minutes, we felt like this product had pretty much completely dried.

We also liked the fact that we were able to sleep overnight without having to put down any towels to keep it off our sheets!  That’s unusual for self tanners that contain a guide like this one does.

Smell (Before Application)

Out of the tube, Clinique Self Sun has a tropical, almost ‘citrusy’ smell.  It seemed to be a little overpowering at first.  But once we began applying it, we actually liked the smell.  That’s definitely something you can’t say about most self tanners!

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

After this product had dried, we liked the smell better than when we just smelled it right out of the tube.  It ended up smelling very pleasant and had virtually no smell at all the next day.

Color Produced

Clinique Self Sun produced a very nice, bronze color for virtually all of our testers.  And even though we tested the ‘medium/deep’ version, the color wasn’t extremely dark.  Most people will appreciate that, especially if you’re fair-skinned to begin with.  If you like being extra dark, you may need to apply this product more than once, or use a different self tanner.

As for streaking or that dreaded ‘orange’ color, we didn’t notice either anywhere on our bodies.

How Long It Lasts

This self tanner lasted a little longer than many other of the self tanning products we’ve tried.  It started to fade after about 4 days, and was pretty much completely gone after about 7.

Of special note, this one faded very smoothly and evenly, which is rare for only but the best self tanners.  Even after about 5 days, we’re weren’t getting a lot of splotchiness and pathciness that you see with other products.  So kudos to Clinique on that!

OK For Men?

Maybe.  This product works great but it has a tiny bit of shimmer to it when you’re applying it.  The shimmer washes off in the morning, but the fact that it’s there at all will turn off many men.

A 4.2 ounce tube of Clinique Self Sun runs about $23 depending on where you buy it.  That comes out to $5.47 an ounce, which really isn’t all that bad considering how well this product works, and how long it lasts.  It’s expensive compared to cheap, drugstore self tanners, but is a bargain compared to many other department store and internet brands.
