Overall Opinion:

After trying out this self tanner, I rank it 2.5 out of 5 stars.  So I think it’s pretty average; it has its pros, and it has its cons.

As far as the pros go, I really like the color this self tanner produces.  It’s just very natural.  It gives me a medium shade tan, and I think the shade will look good on most skin tones. The color is brown, not orange.  The one thing is that I had a few streaks on my forearms.  I think it’s because it is SO hard to blend in.

The product is hard to blend in because it’s so thick.  So it takes some real elbow grease to rub fully into your skin.  You also need to be extra careful because the product is white, so you can’t see where you’re applying it.

The smell is terrible.  It smells so strongly of DHA mixed with a really bad perfume.  I was nauseated while applying it.  Unfortunately, I still smelled bad the morning after I applied it.  The smell went away once I showered it off though.

This self tanner is very expensive compared to most self tanners.  It’s almost $10 per ounce!

So overall, I think this lotion is pretty average as far as self tanners go.

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

Clarins Self Tanning Milky Lotion is a very thick, white lotion.  It does have the appearance of “Milk” and is very creamy and heavy feeling.

There’s no color guide in this self tanner, so it doesn’t show up when you’re applying it.

Application

I found this self tanner pretty hard to blend in due to the thick consistency of the product.  It’s almost like applying a thick body butter to your skin; it’s one of the thicker tanners I’ve used.

I still used a tanning mitt to apply, even though it doesn’t have a color guide. I wanted to protect my palms from turning orange.

Overall, this self tanner does not blend in well and takes a lot longer to apply then most self tanners.  It’s just so thick and since it’s white in color, you can’t see where you’re rubbing it.  So I was extra cautious when applying and it took me about 20 minutes to apply to my full body.

I used SO much product when applying this one, I only go two full body applications out of one bottle.  This lotion is very expensive to begin with, when you factor in you only get two tans out of it, it’s SOO pricy.

Drying Time

Because this lotion is thick, it takes longer to dry.  It took about 30 minutes to dry completely.  It felt a little tacky on my skin as it dried, but it wasn’t the worst I’ve felt.

Smell (Before Application)

Clarins Self Tanning Milky Lotion smells disgusting.  I couldn’t stand the smell as I was applying it.

It smells like old school self tanner, straight DHA with a hint of sweetness.  Unfortunately, I couldn’t stand the smell of this one and I don’t think you’ll like it either.

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

The next morning I could smell DHA, but the sweetness was gone.  So my skin still stunk, like I expected.

I couldn’t wait to take a shower and get the stink off!

Color Produced

When I woke up the morning after applying Clarins Milky Lotion, I was pleasantly surprised with how nice my tan looked.  I had a medium shade tan and it looked very natural.  The only thing I didn’t like is I had a few streaks on my forearms (not sure how that happened?).

I think this color is a good tan for most skin types; it will look good on almost everyone.  It’s not too light and not too dark, it’s very middle of the road as far as color goes.  You’ll just need to be extremely careful while applying it due to the lack of color guide.  I apparently missed a few spots and ended up with some streaks even though I applied very carefully.

But as long as you pay attention when you apply, I think you’ll be happy with the color it produces.

Another plus to this product is that my skin felt extremely moisturized after I applied this lotion.  It’s so thick that it does a really good job at hydrating as well.

How Long It Lasts

I found my tan lasted around 3 days before it started fading.  So you’ll need to apply this one bi-weekly to maintain your tan.

OK For Men?

I think it’s an okay option for men.  Not the best, not the worst.  The color is nice, but it smells and is difficult to apply.

Price

Clarins Self Tanning Milky Lotion is $40.00 per bottle, which works out to almost $10 per ounce!  That’s very expensive as far as self tanners go.
