Overall Opinion:

Overall, I like the idea of this product, but I hated the actual product.  So I gave Vita Liberata Self Tan Dry Oil SPF 50 1 out of 5 stars.  Yes, that is the lowest score I can give, so let me explain why I didn’t like it.

I like the idea of being able to go to the pool or beach looking tan and also being protected by SPF.  But after using this product, I decided it’s definitely better to do that in 2 different steps.  I’d rather apply self tanner at night, and wash off the next morning.  Then I’d rather apply normal sunscreen and hit the beach.

This product is SO hard to apply, and once I did apply it, it left me looking dirty and my skin looked old.  It looked so bad.  I also didn’t see any lasting tan from this self tanner.  I had an instant color from the bronzer, but that’s it.  The bronzer also washed off in the pool after a few hours.

The smell isn’t very good, and the bottle is almost as expensive as real gold.  Ok, that’s an exaggeration, but it’s very expensive.

Overall, I really wasn’t a fan of this Vita Liberata Dry Oil.

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

This is called a dry oil, but it feels more like a thick gel to me.

It’s dark brown in color due to the color guide.  It also is very shimmery.

Application

This one is such a pain to apply!

First off since this dry oil has SPF in it, you need to apply 15 minutes before sun exposure.   I’d definitely allot for more time than that, because it takes forever to apply.

This dry oil is the thickest one I’ve ever used.  It feels more like a gel to me, and it’s so hard to get out of the glass bottle it comes in.  Since the bottle is glass you can’t squeeze it out, and the hole it comes out of is SO tiny. It was definitely meant for a liquid, not a thick gel consistency.

So, I applied the product on to a tanning mitt and then applied to my body.  This one is pretty difficult to blend in because the guide is very dark and the product dries relatively quickly.  So I found that it left me looking streaky in some areas, and I kept trying to blend the product in, but it had already dried.

You can only apply to a small area at a time, so it took me over 30 minutes to apply it.  You also want to make sure you don’t miss any areas or you’ll get sun burnt!

Drying Time

Vita Liberata Self Tan Dry Oil SPF 50 dried very quickly.

As soon as I started blending it into my skin, it dried.  So it only took a few seconds.

Smell (Before Application)

I’m not a fan of how this one smells.

It smells like lemon, and not in a good, botanical, fresh way.  It smells like lemon in more of a household cleaner way. It always has metallic undertones, so it kind of smells like metal.

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

The smell went away very quickly after applying it, and I couldn’t smell it a few minutes after.

Color Produced

OK, so this “self tanner” needs to be applied before going out in the sun, due to it having SPF in it.  It’s definitely not one I would recommend using before bed and washing off in the morning.  So right off the bat, it’s different than your average self tanner.  I ended up using this one before a pool party with a few friends/family.  All I have to say it thank God those people don’t judge me because my tan looked awful.

I apply self tanners in order to limit my time in the sun.  So having a self tanner you HAVE to use before sun use seems counter intuitive to me.

After I applied this one, my skin was immediately darker due to the dark guide/bronzer in it.  But it didn’t look good at all.  The product looked splotchy, and overall my body looked very dirty.  The glitter and bronzer settled in every pore in my body, making my skin look 30 years older than it actually is!  My brother actually asked me what was wrong with the skin on my chest because it looked so weird.

As far as the sun protection aspect of it goes, it did an okay job protecting me from the sun.  But I still ended up with a few pink areas, and I wouldn’t forego your normal SPF in lieu of this product.

Also, the idea of applying a self tanner with DHA in it right before I’m about to go swimming is really confusing to me.  DHA usually needs a few hours on your skin in develop without any water or sweat.  So it didn’t really work as a self tanner for me, but it did instantly bronze my skin.

Another thing I don’t like is you need to reapply this product every 2 hours.  Um, so if I’m at a pool party, I’ll need to whip out my self tanning mitt and spend another 30 minutes reapplying? No thank you.  I also dread thinking about the mess that’d make!

How Long It Lasts

The bronzing effect lasted about 4-6 hours.  But I didn’t really see any lasting tan from it.

Make sure you don’t wear any white bathing suit or clothing while wearing this one, because it transfers to everything it touches!  It will also come off on white towels if you use them after swimming or beach time.

OK For Men?

No.  I really don’t think you’ll like this one men, it’s entirely too much work.

Price

Vita Liberata Self Tan Dry Oil SPF 50 is $15.97 per ounce.  I wish I could put the bulgy eyed emoji here because that’s how in shock I am about the outrageous price of this product.
