Overall Opinion:
I gave Paula’s Choice Self Tanning Foam 3.25 out of 5 stars, so it was a little better than average.
I would’ve given it a higher ranking, but the smell was awful and the application was pretty messy.
This foam is runnier than most, which makes application a pain.
The smell is also really bad; it smells so strongly of DHA. The weird thing was this foam claimed to have no scent at all.
The color I got from this mousse was really nice. I got a medium shade tan that was almost streak free. There were a few areas around my ankles and knees that looked a little funky. But other than that, I really liked the color; I just wish it were a bit darker.
The price of this one is affordable, so overall it’s slightly better than your average self tanner.
Detailed Opinion:
Look and Feel
This self tanner is a foam, that comes out with a light tan color.
It doesn’t have a guide, as the color quickly dissipates once it hits your skin.
The mousse is on the runnier side and doesn’t hold its form as well as others.
Application
Since this mousse is watery, it makes application a bit messy.
I’d definitely recommend using a tanning mitt with this one; otherwise the heat from your hand immediately melts this mousse making it a huge mess.
Even with the tanning mitt the mousse melted pretty fast, making it runny and watery. This caused the product to drip all over the ground, towels, etc.
It has a light tan color, so at least you don’t need to worry about a brown guide staining everything.
Drying Time
Paula’s Choice Self Tanning Foam dried rather quickly.
It dried in under 20 minutes, and I didn’t feel sticky or wet after it dried.
You don’t really need to worry about staining your clothing or your sheets with this one either because there’s no guide.
Smell (Before Application)
This product claims to be “odor free”…well that’s not true.
It smells really strongly of DHA, and the smell gets worse as the product develops.
I don’t see how they can say this has no scent, because it definitely smells of DHA, which isn’t a pleasant smell.
It smells how a lot of self tanners did back in the day, before they used perfumes and scents to cover up the DHA.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
After several hours to scent was even worse. The DHA smell kept getting stronger as the product developed.
The next morning, the smell had died down a little bit but I could still smell a little DHA.
Color Produced
Paula’s Choice Self Tanning Foam produced a nice medium tan.
My tan was even and streak free and I really liked the color. It was natural and not orange at all.
I wish it was a bit darker, but the bottle says you can reapply the following day(s) to deepen your tan if you’d like to.
The areas around my ankles, feet and knees looked kinda funky, but the rest of my tan looked good.
As far as “medium” shade tanners go, this one has a pretty nice color and I look like I laid out in the sun for a day.
How Long It Lasts
My tan lasted 3-4 days before it became splotchy and faded away.
I had some patches on my back and stomach that faded really awkwardly and looked weird.
OK For Men?
Yes, if you men are looking for a medium self tanner, give this one a try.
The color is nice, but application is messy and this one stinks!
Price
Paula’s Choice Self Tanning Foam works out to $3.20 an ounce, which is very affordable.
This is a good price for the color you get with this one.
