I gave Origins The Great Pretender Shimmery Self Tanner 2 out of 5 stars.

I really didn’t like the application process…glitter got everywhere!

The product seemed to dry my skin out, causing my tan to turn our scaly and uneven. The color was also too light for my liking.

But I really liked the smell and how it didn’t take forever to try.

So overall, there were a few things I liked, but I wouldn’t recommend this product.

Detailed Opinion:

Look and Feel

This self tanner comes out with an orange, shimmery guide.

It almost looks like body bronzer when it comes out of the tube. The lotion is very slick and a bit gel like.

Application

Origins The Great Pretender has a very shimmery guide in it, so it’s pretty messy to apply.

The shimmer got all over my bathroom…I even saw sparkles on my sheets the day after I applied it!

I’d highly recommend wearing a tanning mitt while applying this one, or else your palms will turn orange.

As you rub it into your skin, the bronze, orange guide somewhat disappears…but the glitter stays.

I’m not a huge fan of self tanners with glitter in them because self tanning is so messy to begin with and the glitter just takes it to a new level of messy.

I noticed that this one stained my sheets and clothing a bit as well.

Drying Time

This one is pretty average as far as drying time goes.

It took about 20 minutes to completely dry, and I like that I didn’t feel sticky at all while waiting for it to dry.

Like I mentioned earlier, don’t touch anything while waiting for this one to dry or it will be stained with orange glitter!

Smell (Before Application)

The Great Pretender smells minty and fresh.

I loved the smell of this one because I’m a huge fan of mint-scented products. They remind me of a spa, and smell very clean to me.

I’ve never smelled a self tanner with a mint scent before, so I was pleasantly surprised when I smelled this one.

It did a really good job of covering up any DHA smell.

The mint smell is pretty strong and a bit overwhelming, so I wouldn’t recommend it to those who aren’t a fan of mint.

Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)

When I woke up the minty smell was completely gone.

But I also didn’t smell any DHA, which was great!

Color Produced

I didn’t like the tan I got from this one.

It was way too light, and it seemed to dry my skin out.

My tan looked very scaly and patchy, and I think it’s because the product really dried my skin out.

The shade was a light to medium shade (more on the light side), so I would’ve liked to be a bit darker.

You’ll need to apply this one a few days in a row to achieve a medium to dark tan.

My tan wasn’t very natural looking at all.

The good news is that the shimmery guide came off after I showered, so the tan itself wasn’t shimmery.

This one may be better for someone who doesn’t naturally have dry skin (like myself).

How Long It Lasts

My tan lasted about 2 days before drastically fading.

As it faded I became more and more scaly, which was not a pretty sight.

OK For Men?

No, I think the shimmer in it makes it more of a women’s product.

The color also wasn’t quite up to par and the product dried my skin out.
